When planning a trip, there’s nothing like advice from a local or a frequent visitor. RueBaRue asked savvy globetrotters to share what they like best about the places they love. This time round, we asked Lauren DiMarco to share with us her Boston secrets.
Why did you choose Boston?
I chose Boston because it’s a fantastic US city and I happen to live there. It’s a very approachable city in that the public transit is easy to negotiate but it is also extremely walkable. Boston has so much charm and only seems to get better all the time.
When was the first time you visited the city?
The first time I visited Boston was in 1997. I didn’t immediately fall in love but once I moved to Boston, boy did I ever fall hard for that city. I moved to Boston in the summer of 1998, and if you’ve ever visited Boston then you may know summertime is the best season.
What is your favorite place for…
Breakfast – The Paramount in Beacon Hill. DO NOT FEAR the line. It’s not fancy but goodness it’s good.
Lunch – The Met Bar at Dartmouth and Newbury Street. I just like their menu…something for everyone and really good. It’s got outdoor seating in the summertime, which I love.
Mid afternoon treat – Georgetown Cupcakes on Newbury Street.
Cocktails – I like the Seaport area for drinks. Again, a really great place with fabulous water views in the summertime.
Dinner – Aquitaine in the South End. It’s an oldie but a goodie. I’ve never had a bad meal or poor service there – ever. It’s a fun cozy spot for a date or a group. But, the bar is fun too if you are dining alone. Plus, it’s really reasonable.
Which part of town do you like and feel that most visitors never get to see?
I think a lot of visitors don’t go to Southie. In fact, I don’t even get there myself but it is supposed to be really great for restaurants and bars.
What is your favorite touristy landmark in the city?
I really love the Public Garden but also the Freedom Trail. Both are not to be missed if you ask me.
Are there any shopping secrets we should know about?
Well for one, there is no sales tax on clothes and shoes. If you have access to a car, Wrentham Outlets in Massachusetts are outstanding.
Do you have a favorite museum?
I love the Museum of Fine Arts. It isn’t too overwhelming and they have some really great special exhibits.
What is your favorite hotel in town?
My favorite hotel right now is The Envoy Hotel in the Seaport area. It’s new and I’ve actually stayed there. Fun and funky and great service. Their rooftop bar is outstanding!
